Evaporation or reverse osmosis for the liquid fraction of digestate?
Reverse osmosis (RO) comes from drinking and process water treatment. On the liquid fraction of digestate it needs ultrafiltration (UF) in front, frequent membrane cleaning, and it recovers around half of the volume as permeate. The rest is a concentrate that still has to be stored, hauled or treated. An evaporator takes out up to 90 % with MVR on thin fractions up to 2.2 % DS, or around two thirds with a thermal evaporator on waste heat, and binds the ammonia as ASL.

From plate to field: how a food-waste AD plant turns digestate into water and fertiliser
On a food-waste AD plant in eastern Switzerland, a 4-stage thermal vacuum evaporator closes the loop from restaurant leftovers to the field. It takes around 40 m³ of water a day out of the liquid digestate, recovers the nitrogen as ammonium sulphate solution (ASL) for a liquid fertiliser, keeps the nutrient concentrate usable for organic farming and returns all distillate as process water to the plant's own de-packaging line. Reduce. Recover. Reuse. On one site, in operation

How does an evaporator perform in daily operation? Measured data from a food-waste AD plant
Short answer: On our reference plant, a food-waste AD plant in Switzerland, our 4-stage thermal vacuum evaporator (DV series) turns around 350 kW of CHP waste heat into around 40 m³ of distillate per day, or 4.5 to 4.7 litres per kWh. Over 51 complete operating days it was evaporating 82 % of the time, runs unattended at night and at weekends and needs about 1.5 hours of staff time per day. The heat transfer stayed stable from August to October, with a planned acid and alkali

RENURE is here: What the new EU regulation means for manure and digestate
On 9 February 2026, the European Commission adopted an amendment to the Nitrates Directive (Commission Directive (EU) 2026/288). It allows Member States to let farmers apply certain nitrogen fertilisers recovered from livestock manure, known as RENURE, on top of the existing limit for manure. For biogas plant operators and livestock farms, this opens new options for nutrient recovery. This post explains what RENURE is, what has changed, where it already applies and what role
